Honestly you can't be everywhere all at once but Ogilvy has hired professional note takers and will be posting screens using tumblr. If you are live on site you can go to a gallery and actually pick-up some large prints. I guess you could call this active art? This Star Wars documentary called "Begins" is totally excellent and unbelievable that it this is fan made. Yup, jambedavdar took tons of by audio the actors and strung them together along side the whole "first" Star Wars and some great behind the scenes footage.

Shows tons of deleted scenes. Alternate actors. All of sorts of great stuff. Weird that the Studio never made anything like this.

We should all hail the thieves and false prophets this week. Not that anybody on my block cares. I think they are moderately retarded in their 100x50 plots. They buy into every Republican lobby as they smoke screen change wrapped in old values & Religion while the very very rich continue to put our country into dept. 1% of the wealthy have made 24% of the wealth in the US. You know that trillion dollar deficit is going to keep growing because there is no end to greed. The banks want us to take it easy and will be happy to get rid of the middle-class. Exxon-Mobile wants more tax breaks for their corporation to help make them soften their more than 19 billion in profits this past year. They want to rob retirees from their meager social security. They want to allow more cut backs on Healthcare, Education or unemployment compensation for the people who are struggling to afford this privilege. So seriously what do we get neighbors? Lets make sure we give tax breaks to billionaires and make sure we continue to move job to china. Keep supporting false prophets and you will get zero in return. Death is easier.

We are trapped by our favorite devices, politics and routines that are willingly captured on public forums mostly in our minds to be the most popular. UFO over China footage is really beautiful

I've never seen anything like this. Footage seems like it's shot from a plane that is being passed by this lovely lit object that is leaving this after glow spraw. The video was originally posted youku.com the Chinese version of youtube.com. Pretty awesome.

I swear there are UFO's flying over New Jersey now. Not to sound paranoid but is 10.10.10 a day of reckoning when our Alien visitor friends will make entrance? Because there is a this really bright northern type star that has never been there before from what I recall (over Perth Amboy/Woodbridge area )and then north of me towards Newark Airport another more colorful object that seem to change colors as planes pass near by. The light has been hanging for awhile tonight pretending to be helicopter. The thing is helicopters don't fly so high and they ten to circle.

UFO's render nuclear missiles useless

Retired Air Force Captain Robert Salas discussing events surrounding aeriel objects that had flown above nuclear facilities and created guidance system malfunctions. The instruments indicated that the guidance systems had been disabled thus the weapons shut down. After the event he was asked to sign a non-disclosure which he followed up until about 1994 where he had requested information about Echo Flight Incident to have the information be declassified. More than 10 missiles were rendered useless . He collected lots of historical documentation to support this event. Also, Wayne Arneson a communications who was a top secret control officers reports on an event from in 1967. He confirms shut-down of the ufos in Montana from communications he was monitoring. Also, Robert Jameson another missile engineer, March 1967 who was in charge of restarting missiles. It was reported to him and he confirmed that the Oscar flight had gone down which was about 3 missiles. He talks about a UFO going into a canyon in Roy Montana and was debriefed about procedures on what to do when they encountered these objects.

So I was watching that new show on the tv last night The Event and it delivered what looks like a honest to goodness UFO show about the government keeping secrets from the public. Please start-up the disinformation machine now. But if you believe your eyes check out this picture from apocalypse7thunders (which is invite only ufo watcher blog btw) clearly shows what looks to be a bunch of flying discs or flying objects in the sky. Come on Obama you have a look alike in the show and everything! This would be a good time to come clean with all this "top secret" stuff. I think it would be good for the economy or at the very least some extremely crafty marketing ply in collusion with Hollywood. (Wouldn't be the first time except usually goes the other way in the denial mode.)

The future of screen technology may be making you actually take your time to brush your teeth because you are reading a article in a mirror. How cool is that? or could there be more shaving accidents and face dinks? I can barely have a convo when the tv is on. I find myself either turning of the boob tube or at least placing something on mute if somebody is talking to me. I like to try and pay attention and the benefits of literally doing something that is passive vs active verses two things that are active is not really a talent i have honed. Sure I can walk and chew gum and talk on the phone but is this safe? Ha! ok so we can have content played everywhere just like Minority Report. DEAR CREATIVES: Ok finally I am able to shout it out loud but I'll let Lars Bastholm, Ogilvy's CCO invite you and give you the skinny on the project that has been consuming me for the past couple months. About every week we will feature a mini documentary on Artists and folks who do cool things. A.I. Can now detect Sarcasm? No Really?

Direct from POPCSI.COM: The Future is now reports that some Israeli research team analyzed data using a method what they call SASI which is a Semi-supervised Algorithm for Sarcasm Identification(WHAT?) Which claims it can recognize sarcastic sentences in online product reviews with an astounding 77% accuracy rate. I for one love sarcastic product reviews it helps me decide on making important purchasing decisions because people tend to be pretty honest when they are writing them. Imagine if literal filters were put in place the web would be a really dry, uncomfortable and boring place.

On the other hand a Sarcasm(or verbal irony) software like this could really be useful invention - just imagine the possibilities! You could essentially also have a tweet alert and filter comments by an intent category in case you were asleep at the wheel. Check out the paper (PDF)

Understanding Facebook's Open Graph security for first graders

Here is the thing when considering sharing your stuff with your "friends" it's important to be able to distinguish between close ones and acquaintances. Once your mom joined facebook it became a very public forum. So you make changes or stick with it. I can see why the knee jerk reaction to the Open Graph but it seems to me facebook is making changes and listening while trying to grow their thing. Remember there was a time that your address and phone number were in a big thick book unless you paid not to be included or have your number listed. So what is the difference here? If you transmitted over a CB radio anybody could respond.

So what if you give a little more info? Don't you want custimized solutions for the things you like so they automatically display for you? A interesting example of the Open Graph change is if your boss is your friend on FB and you like a song on Pandora or article on CNN and they happen to be on the site with Open Graph enabled they will be able to see you like it or shared it if you choose to have the info made available. This is when knowing more about your settings is important. Again, it's important to know that if you read it and don't physically click the "LIKE" button then nobody will know.

Granted would be nice if you were allowed to editorialize why you liked something but alas that's what twitter and FB are for when you share with your friends in the first place. The NYT via scobleizer pointed out from public Q&A with a FB exec that the way Pandora is using the concept opens up even more discovery of music but I digress. What if you don't want your friends to know you like The Bare Naked Ladies(I don't btw)?

Well one option that is gathering momentum is to quit facebook all together on May 31st. but that would be just like quitting smoking or worse yet television no? What are you going to go to Amazon to a buy or download a book with all this new time on your hands and what do you ignore the reviews? How cool would it be if the people you trust helped you make a selection instead of a complete stranger.

So what if I still want to communicate with friends virtually but don't want to give marketers more access than I am comfortable with? Well there is diaspora.com for that issue which is open source project that is currently collecting funding to keep your private info in and advertisers out. We'll see how this goes. The world does run on advertising whether we like it or not it's a question are people willing to pay more?

But do watch what you say or a drunk Zuckerman may delete your FB account if he does not like what you say!

Save Water and don't let it drip Water Aid Video competition

I grew-up in California with the saying "If it's yellow let it mellow and if it's brown flush it down." Here is a video of some creatives at work having fun with 48hr video competition for Cannes Advertising Festival to bring attention to the water and sanitation crisis that is killing thousands of people every day. Mobile Experience in Times Square

So it's been a long month but finally able to share my latest experiential project. Make this a destination kind of thing for the Holidays into the New Year in your travel or experience it virtually the Kodak Times Square Smile Gallery @ 46th street in front of the Marriot Marquee on the Earth Cam.

Here is how to do it:
1) Send your photo to kodak@aerva.com with a short caption in the subject line.
2) Then give it 24-48hrs so Kodak can approve.
3) Once they do you will receive a approval email with a short.
4) You can then trigger your image up to the board up to six times. The picture will also display randomly in-between the adverts. Get your 15 seconds of fame now!

I hope to post a case study in 2010. Lots of other neat stuff in the works.

Funny article on Mac calling PC that their Best Buy TV ad is unfair where the user ends up buying a PC well because it's cheaper! HAHAHAHA! It is time to make nice guys

Everybody should be watching out for the Google OS which is really a browser. It's going to get ugly as Microsoft only makes about 15 bucks net according to the WSJ and that price is going to drop. If you're paranoid, and you should be, Google already has too much information on you and will now try and drive the cost of your hardware/sfotware too. Google would only release an OS because they want to improve the world. Right? Watch your back PC and MACs.

Sony BMG screws the Emusic indie pooch

Well unless you have been under a rock and not paying attention there has been some wheeling and dealing going on behind the emusic scenes with Sony/BMG. Like gasoline the cost of your online music is "slightly" going up to give you better service. Whaaaaaaaaaat? You mean double right Emusic? Early this year iTunes started charging a premium for some artists (1.28) and slightly less for other. Emusic is raising prices on average of 100% as they bring on the Sony/BMG catalog for releases that are two years or older. Ok fine but do i really care about Stevie Ray Vaughan at this point? Gimme Anti Records or nonesuch releases. If this is part of that plan. cool. If not it sucks.

To put it in perspective. My previous music download subscription account afforded me 65 downloads a month for $14.99 us dollars. Basically 23cents per track. The new plan I'm being forced to subscribe too is the same monthly fee for 37 tracks which is roughly 40.5 cents a track. Which is just about double what I was paying or 100% more!! I think gas prices are somehow related but we have not been able to figure out the connection yet. For albums with 12 or more tracks they are going to offer on select releases only a flat cost of just 12 download credits. The albums that already have this is limited so would be a good move by indies to think Nice Price but time will tell since all of your basic customer service plans details have not been released in full yet. You know I would have been fine with a slight increase but this is pretty harsh just so i can get me some Alicia keys. C'om on! Why not have those pop artists make better music or phase them out entirely. emusic has had over 250 Million downloads since it's launch by mostly independent artists (Remember last year we enjoyed the rolling stones on emusic for a spell).

Basically now you get 3 albums with of an avg 12 songs or more per album for 12 download credits, as opposed to 5.5 albums on old 65 luxurious download plan. Which is a 128% decrease in my subscription service. Bah hum-bug.

I'm also supposedly getting a +15 free booster track. Some legacy user with larger download plans (I imagine) will get a 25 booster pack. i wonder if this is every month or a one time thing? Because that would make it 52 tracks and 28cents a track which would be a fair rent 10% increase landlord. For those not grandfathered in the deal sucks or a least to begin with but still better than the lower 78 cent download price. I'll imagine it's a one time thing and will stick it out but the minute I start to notice the indies start to fall beneath promotion line I'll move on. I'm warning you emusic despite the single thread response the corp strategy has been to shoot the pooch first, watch them holler before responding. The internet is good like that.

Some of the Artists that are part of the Sony catalog will satisfy a lot of the alternative crowd who care about The Clash, Uncle Tupelo (sorry no wilco) and lou reed if you don't already own the damn cds!. For the older crowd you'll get Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke along with some classic rock Jefferson Airplane, Meat Loaf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, foo fighters, ben folds and some forgettable stuff as well, like kings of leon(my pov anyways), Rage against the machine. This of course is a partial list. Emusic is still the best deal out there for legal DRM free music.

So the other day I'm about 4 houses away from mine and the front right wheel feels like it has a flat. Sort of turns right really hard so I mandle the steering wheel to bring it on home so I can at least be broken down in front of my home. When I jump out of the car all the wheels have their air except one is turned all crooked as if it's almost detached. Yikes! Now 10 minutes prior I was jamming down the Garden State Parkway going my usual speeds. eh-hem. What is wrong with this picture? Ya 10 minutes prior I could have bit the dust hard. Now for the fun part the guys who had replaced my struts and full front alignment are to blame. They blamed wear and tear from redoing my alignment twice before. BS. I'm very lucky to telling this tale. They didn't charge me for the redo and got it done faster than I've ever got car services. I won't drop names here because they are nice enough guys but luck has not been on my side lately. I suppose though having this incident happen to me so close to home was lucky. So next time you're a little stressed think of this simple story and don't stew over the small stuff. Life is really friggin' short. Timing is everything.

Totally odd premise for a social network site (based out of Pahrump, NV?) that is attempting to manage social karma called ventma.com by inviting the public to identify whistle blowers, call out sneaks or shall we say liars, cheaters, grifters, rapscallions, scallywags, scoundrels, shysters, sneaks, etc. Really for those folks who walk on water but on the other hand an attempt to socially level the playing field in this new age of transparency. If you're called out there seems to be a option to defend yourself. Booya for the haters and the over conscious social well adjusted individuals who always gotta be right. Some of the counter points for keeping lets say marijuana illegal, idiot managers, and are juvenile so if you're looking to get into a argument this is the place to do it. People can list their un-interests and of course see what Ventma's CEO Ryan Breen's life philosophy which is kind of short dude and not so revealing. Here's their over all premise:

I much preferred hatebook.org when it was still active because there was no privacy at all. Everything you posted or emailed to another individual was open to all users. They say they are coming back but we'll see what happens. On the other hand there is nothing wrong with being straight up hater for everything even things we know are right. Google open source Andriod phones are coming

As confirmed by the NYT blog yesterday Google expects up to 18 Android phones to be available on the market by the end of the year. Developers can get their motors running and download Android 1.5 SDK stack and you business types can start marketing. Apparently the open system is going to have 3 working business models and they are already are offering several working applications.

First: The obligation-free option: where manufacturers can download a free version of Android and load it onto their devices and provide access to as few or as many apps as they want. But the manufacturers cannot pre-load popular Google applications, like Gmail or Google calendar. Which seems sort of limiting if you ask me but will keep big brother out.

Second: The small strings option: Basically this is is the same as Option 1, but the manufacturers need to sign a distribution agreement to include on the phone Google applications. Of the 18 to 20 phones coming out this year, 12 to 14 will more than likely subscribe to this option according to Mr. Andy Rubin the director for Mobile Platforms for Google. Remember when your PC always had to come with IE. Same idea.

The Third: The bigger strings option or the no-censorship version: These phones Google calls “The Google Experience.” They are differentiated by having the honor of the “Google” logo on the device and will include a range of Google applications that the carrier and handset maker agree to leave on the phone. They also must not to censor access to the Android open developer market. The risk being that if the shaken baby is suddenly recreated by some dumbass developer it must not be forcible removed. It must remain as part of the applications available for consumers. This is not about taste. 5-6 manufacturers are going to go for this relationship model.

This video short called The Vendor Client relationship - in real world situations is very painful to watch and all too familiar. Negotiating more for less is one of the things that is ruining our technology economy. Similar to the issues associated with outsourcing everything. Chipping down your vendor all the time is not the way to go. I've been in this situation where you have to explain to some Clients that you indeed can't always get what you want for the same price. Just because they either F'd up or want more service for whatever money they have in their ill conceived budget or crap they changed their mind half way through the meal and ordered a new entree for the price of one meal. Time is always your best defense in these situations along with some pre-budgeting or allocating hours for the unknown. Let them know that you'd love to do something but we've run out of time or will need to devote more time because of their cascading changes. Now what makes it worse is in our job market with hundreds of well qualified candidates selling themselves for the same job these days there is a potential and the risk of underselling. With glut of great talent, I fear there is a lot of under bidding happening, with the same sort of self deprecating mentality. This is the opposite problem post 911 where folks were totally overpaid and had zero experience. So for the duration its a once again a buyers market, not a sellers market, where people will be perceived as effective individuals even though their requests are so ballsy it's hard to imagine them being able to sleep at night, and forget about having them understand caveats or roadmap for their requests. That's when the client turns deaf too!

Facebook updates their insight profile analytics

If you have a "public profile" as a Artist, Brand or organization on Facebook and if you click view more and then view insights a whole bunch of new stats will come-up that are much like your basic web site analytics but now you can see the age demographics broken down by how many wall posts, comments, sex and like flags. You need some action on your page for the whole display to work by real users other than just yourself. I think the bar is low but definitely needs to be recent so you can see weekly metrics according to FB. The old insights page was ok but in an effort to encourage self managed advertising this tool was destined to evolve and it has.

The idea seems to be geared to give you the controls to spend money to promote your public profile. I had no clue this was here but then again I was not paying that much attention. Then again ignoring my millions of fans would be bad especially if you have access to them all in one place! This whole marketing ploy is starting to make sense just when everybody is getting ready to jump the shark to tumblr, blip and twitter. I'm still a fan because the masses seem pretty happy and it's simple to participate and not as cluttered as that myspace of a eyesore. I just need to figure out the meaning of post quality score and I'm also digging into the active fans stat and see what that is about. If anything this info will just reconfirm some of the info you might already have know beyond the very high-level info like number of fans. This gives your fans "activity". Lets see how we do over the next months as we prepare the slow wire and eastern anchors to play some shows this summer. Now if Last.fm, which I am a huge fan of as band litmus test, or if the big black box known as myspace did this we would have a real competitive landscape and give the artists more power.

We're also giving Sonic Bids a test drive over at the HeadPhone Music HQ. I've never been too keen to fork out money to get noticed so that is the only thing that is keeping me on the fence. A open commerce market model might be better for the little guys but sonic bids does aggregate your last.fm and myspace friend counter which is a good start but the google buzz tool they include is pretty insignificant as it contains a bunch of unspecific noise. Now if they can tie the user interactions into video plays and song/video plays this will all be rocking info to have. The only thing it does not do is help you write good songs and make the folks listen and like your music. That's the hard part about marketing music ain't it?

Westfied Memorial Day Parade 2009

This years parade started around 9:45 and lasted what seemed like a whole 25 minutes. We got there way early so if you get there around 9:30 that's plenty of time to get a decent spot. If you like short parades this one is good for the kids. In fact it seemed that all of the kids were in the parade with the Cub Scout, Brownies and Marching Band, etc. There was a strong show of the police force marching with machine guns which I did not think was appropriate at all but over all the crowd was not too bad. There were no vendors either which was also good so you had to go support the local merchants for your breakfast foods.

Are you confused as to what to tools use for what for all these social networks? Why so many widgets and sites to help you manage your life in virtual life? What? I know you thought you already had a handle on life post DOT COM but why not just download another piece of waste (software). It's free to try it kid.

Well you are not alone and quite frankly we predict this wild wild west to continue growing like the crazy weed; as the business verticals (business, sports, entertainment, news, technology, etc) figure out how to get your money. When a clear dominance is re-established and the footing is set we'll all continue to get sucked in like we did with the early days of television and radio. Well ladies and germs we are getting there and the train is moving fast as rapidly as language will permit early adopters and tastemakers to speak and give their opinions. Separating the old business paradigm and connecting life and work in new and innovative ways is what is being created here in this entangled but awesome intraweb.

There are many ways to look at the confounded paths of web trends and analytics. The first is by site traffic which clearly depicts in the graphics how we are using the paths and who has the largest audience but what does it mean to you? The information architects are using the analogy of a crazy train system to define these web trends. Go over there and download the whole map it really is very impressive. Each node with it's own business model. The slice I like the most is the key right below which breaks down all the different social factors that help define success of a trend. Not as straight forward as the concepts are mostly opinion based but the way they did it expresses scale and levels of success. Not monetization necessarily, as that is the end game, but the relationship between all the different properties in the web stratosphere. I tried to get at the issue by thinking of life in terms of the taxonomy of people in my FB notes a few months back and when everybody was posting random photos. Enter social networks to help you organize these ideas and abstract concepts any which way you like to add to the confusion. Everybody would like to tag and categorize stuff but not everybody is good at it.

This key is not everything you need of course but just a understanding of the different types of the intellectual capital that is exchanging at such a phenomenal rate. I'm thinking interactions should work just like a coupon so you can buy something or get something out of the "free" exchange of traffic. You see it happening subtlety on blip.fm where you can give points to users that you can then pay forward or rating videos on youtube. The credit is meaningless of course but what if it weren't? What if that were real money? Would it retain it's value and become virtual spam? Of course it would. The challenge would to figure out how make a smart algorithm to filter a thinly veiled popularity contest or paid linkage. Which is why I like being able to accept friends like on my last.fm itunes playlist or FB account. Not a lot of meaningful interactions happening on last.fm that I can tell. The site is mostly for playlist junkies. Although, I'm sure that is going to change as destination commerce types integrate more with middleware (twitter, tumbler).

As a side bar see the review stalker post that asks the question what if music were free? Which is just one of the verticals that is trying to organize commerce like we have been used to since the invention of buying music not renting for live performances. Basically somebody invented a additional layer just like a new product or brand you can buy at the grocery store.

While these ideas are being exchanged and traffic is being counted by the man (google & yahoo). They are the deciders as to what gets counted for your point of entry in a search. I'm seeing regular advertising running so fast to get intertwined and in front and become a part of the audience building and point of entry process it's scary. This must scare google a little bit being that twitter recently passed on a very large offer. What is curious is that for a lot of start-ups there are no blatant adverts yet mainly because they they have the luxury to be in their audience building mode 44 Million goes a long way. Although 1 Billion sounds good. Think of how many hamburger have been sold?

Which brings up a issue with so many people asking you to take action. Do you really care? How do you measure that effectively? You would think they should know what you like and why shouldn't they? They know people need to work and shop to eat and if the marketeers are not there making noise nobody is going to visit their store. But the question becomes how is having a tumblr account going to help me help them? Ok it is yet another aggravation to figure out but that is half the fun but lets think. What is your in point? What is in "it" for you?

Slate recapped Barack Obama's first 100 days in the most transparent tongue and cheek way possible. Totally funnier than John Stewart could have done but then again he does it everyday as part of his full time job. Kudos go out to authors Christopher Beam and Chris Wilson. Just the title along had me cracking up "Barack Obama Sent Somali Pirates a Trio of Snipers". Let the games and copy cats begin! I personally don't think anybody could satisfied with state of things. Although we need to keep a positive outlook. Let us not forget the guy inherited a shit storm of which no country has seen since the plaque and even with this pandemic flu (official government link) adding insult to injury we need to persevere and make do. My advice is to wash your hands and do what you have to.

Praxinoscope turntable video

This is one of the most beautiful animations I've seen in a long time. The best part about it was there were no tricky computers used during the process. Just good ole' frame per seconds, planning and a praxinoscope. (That's the mirror thing on top of the turntable). Ok maybe David Wilson used a calculator at some point to create Moray McLaren's "We Got Time" but he really drew all this stuff and played around with light and time. See the making of turntable video by David Wilson. The music itself is spacey and Pink Floyd influenced alla coldplay and represents the music greatly. The feel of the animation reminds of the moby curated laser show which I saw in 2003 at the planetarium in n.y.c. whic was totally fantastic experience.

I grew up recycling and appreciating nature. I know where that influence came from. I know we're here for brief moments and I also feel there is something else. This my parents and grandparents instilled. I've seen the shows about the after but I also look at my daughter and see my grandfather's eyes. George Anderson was a gentle and generous soul. Every time I was out in California I always made it a point to visit him in the Valley of the moon. He taught me how to swing a golf club and shared a love of music. He was super kind and it showed in smile. The time before last he gave me a wood clock that he had made. I actually made him sign the back so I could one day show my daughter who was just one at the time. He was a teacher and a engineer for a time in his life and was always making stuff in his garage. Today she is two(literally) and I hope one day she can look at her kids, if she is lucky, and share something about her parents, and her parents parents, and their parents. That is the afterlife. G*d Bless the unknown and peace be with you. This is a set-list for part of the journey.

Summer Sandboxes are fun

It occured to me the other day that innovation starts pretty early in life. The simple game of taking all the sand out of the sandbox instead of playing with it inside the described space follows one of the rules of innovation. You need to take risks to get a reward and who said you need to play with it a certain way. Well there are certain rules you need to follow; like you don't play or bring the sand inside the house intentionally (insert friend enemy metaphor here). Which is your control group. Although, it does get in there sometimes everything else is fair game. So if your end goal is to make a mess or create the next 'thing-a-magir' TM. Go for it but make sure you can measure it in some meaningful way. (X+TIME = $) and in these uncertain financial days people have a lot of free time to figure out what X is in the sandbox of life.

In this economic times it's important to support family run businesses to insure the survival of our American way. City Tavern in Elizabeth is one of those places located near a court house and famous for it's Skirt Steak. Moderate prices and awesome service with Hispanic sense of family and excellent service. The most expensive bottle of wine was 28 but offered great selections in the 14 dollar range with plenty of Modelo especial and other regional beers and a full bar. When it gets a little later in the evening there is a twist to the skirt steak but don't be alarmed it's just the Tavern's way of showing that restaurant is metropolitan as it serves food late. We took the whole family early and enjoyed the music and vibe very much and we can't wait to go back and bring friends. The City Tavern is located at 1109 Elizabeth Ave, Elizabeth, NJ and offers international cuisine from guacamole made fresh on your table to beef empanadas or pork chops. Great fun and highly recommended.

I'm a advocate of change and early adopter of many web technologies. I've seen this interweb turn into this convoluted and confusing place. I welcome folks to take risks and look at "stuff" from a different perspective all the time. Having the job most of the time to lead seemingly naive folks to think different (TM) and realize the propriety of humanity. So I was psyched to read and see this old apple commercial post over at the 5th Finger Food mobile blog. The simple message reminded me that it is important to be creative in these strange and uncertain times as this is when great changes and innovation happens. When and if mobile can support Flash on all platforms things are going to go nuts and it will be good for all.

North Jersey is known for bad smells but there was a mystery smell like maple syrrup wafting in the air every once in while for past 5 years. Sensitive noses that were out and about picked up on it. I sure as hell didn't. I try and keep my windows closed and doors locked whenever I'm up in the JC, Newark or Hoboken area in my car. AC or heat. Whatever the case the mysterious smell has been discovered. Now we a can go on with our lives and all you other people can stay away.

Beer Pong for iPhone

I played the iPhone beer pong game this morning and it was pretty cool. So if you need another reason to avoid getting a wii this might solve that issue but is certain to test your dexterity and gamer wrist. In general games are fun. There was a period of time where gaming sucked the life and creativity out of me. So one of the advantages of having relatives that move to weird parts of the US, that are not in the tri-state area, is that it forces you to break new ground. On this holiday trip I found an awesome record store in Little Rock,AK called Been Around Records,CDs & Tapes (1216 S University Ave). That has so much vinyl it is literally stacked between the stacks. You have to sort of walk sideways. I am going to have to go back with a list. I found a mint XTC vinyl copy of Oranges & Lemons. For the car and summer time garage I had to picked up Let It Bleed on cassette. Sort of my catcher in the rye - I can't help myself. A Link Wray & The Wrayman CD Law Of The Jungle! The Swan Demos '64. There was a whole stack of stuff that i just didn't have the time to sort through. I left behind a Troggs record and a couple sun 45's which i am sure were more than $10.

RIP Lorenzo the blue amazon parrot

He was 31 years young and was supposed to live to be 80 human years but I guess he wasn't in it for the long hall like I had imagined. We got him in Guatemala when he was whee little bird rescued from scientists doing testing on birds or so the story goes. He's made every move with out a problem and it has been inside fight who was going to get him next amongst the wifes. He even endured a Chicago winter or two along his years and if could only talk, he'd have a lot of stories of his travels to tell and miss-haps with mountain lions, other birds and squirrels. It is a very sad, sad loss for my family and I personally am going to miss his skreeches and whistling very much. Most of the people who have ever been to my parents houses in New Jersey to California have partied with Lorenzo and tried to make him say more than the few words he knew. I even had him in College for awhile and nursed him when he had a very bad cold and he bounced back. So I was very shocked when I got the news this morning. So please lets have a moment of silence and hug your pet.

Travel log: It has been a long time since I've gone up in the air in anything but a jet. They totlly look cool and I wonder if they burn more or less fuel? As I siteon the tarmac I wonder if they recent lower gas prices have helped or is this part of the strategic cutt-backs? According to CNN the economy is at an all time low since 911. Nobody's retirement money seems to be safe. So those little IRAs have shrunk even more. The ony thing you can seem to count on is earning and saving physical dollars and fly via balloon, I guess, and work to earn 2x as much since every 5 years to be safe. In theory we could all be millionaires but will be meaningless since trillian is the million.
Inflation is going to consume us. Paranoid maybe but the RNC and DNC need to get our economy back on track and my confidence leans to Obama/ bidden.

The best SNL introduction in years Tina Fey had me pretty convince at first glance she was Sarah Palin and Amy Poehler did her Hillary Clinton. They really laid into Palin's positions in politics and rightly so. I am still trying to figure out why having Russia in my backyard would make anybody a part of global politics. So Floridians know a lot about communism because Cuba is so close? Come-on totally dumb. Speaking of which, the latest hub-bub is that Republican Woman are going after Oprah? Are you kidding me? Just because she refuses to have Sarah Palin on her show; a group of Florida woman are going after her. Boy are they in for a surprise, can't wait till it backfires on them and Oprah's viewership and subscriptions go-up. Florida of all places should be careful to get the hive all worked up, it's like messing with Mother Teresa when you poke Oprah.

What you need to decide is do you want to pay attention to Sarah Palin being an anti-semite or check-out the GILF in a bikini totting a gun? Oh so much fun for amateur Photoshop artists. You know nobody would ever do this to Hillary (ok maybe nobody) but there are different rules for men and women in politics and now clearly for Democratic women and Republican women.

Watching the cut-aways seemed liked the RNC folks were at playoff game and there with drunken arrests ( I wonder how the hookers did?). Seriously, apparently there were over 300 arrests of protestors and photojournalists. I don't think there was a single one for the Democratic national convention or at least CNN did not show anybody ( I think people really like Hillary) getting tear gas thrown at them or kicked out of the Hockey rink. Forget about the other networks. They are too afraid to ruffle any feathers with their fair news coverage but these folks sure were prepared to get their riot on. The funny in jail demand from the alleged rioters in the county lock-up was that the trans-gender prisoners be treated fairly and get their own room? Radical. This is the sort of thing Hunter S Thompson would be proud of; the anarchists are pissed and I'm sure booking Rage Against the Machine in town did not help either but alas there was rioting to be had and money to be made. Vacation Purchase: Seagull Coastline Grand parlor guitar

This weekend was the close of a much overdue vacation to the Hampton's. Sounds fancy I know. Last year we stayed here I eyed an interesting weathered looking spot called the Hampton Music and Arts. I suspected there would be some interesting finds inside and a year later I was right. On the walls I spotted a vintage (not for sale) Jaguar and old Gibson hollow body but this time around i had an agenda. starving for traveling six string the guy running the place introduced me to Seagull guitars from the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. I played some of the cheaper things in the store and then he pulled this parlor guitar out after we had a conversation about the sound of the weirder looking traveling guitars. the price was about 125 out of the range that I wanted to spend but a couple strums and I was sold. I'm a simple and easy guy. The Coastline Cedar Grand is beautifully crafted and detailed. I should have you know for something this compact it sounds very warm and big for it's size. You should know I am Martin D15 guy who's been playing for a long time and yet this one is going to be the gitter I bring on vacation. Thanks Seagull.

Montauk Long Island Hamptons Traffic sucks

The one seriously grueling thing about vacationing in the Hampton's is going driving anywhere East of Hampton Bay. It is single road abomination of a traffic jam. Why anybody in their right mind would want drive anywhere during regular hours when it could take you two hours to get there is beyond me. I get why the really rich take helicopters and planes but just traveling up the highway is terrible during the summer going out towards Amagansett and East Hampton. West Hampton is not so bad. Granted this is our second summer in Quogue and getting there is pretty easy once you get through Brooklyn and past Kennedy. On this mini trip the reward was eating Lunch at the Lobster Roll and walking on the beach at the lighthouse at Montauk with the daughter. Although the whole day was lost traveling it was one of those easy trips that turned into 3/4 of a day of driving on a single lane highway. Will I do it again next summer sure just a word of advise for others make sure to bring your black card or wad of cash. Trust me.

The commute saga as usual was hell today on NJ transit. Today's excuse broken switch outside of Newark Penn. The platform is now filled with more passengers than it can handle. No refreshments for anybody and I can't open mine because it is illegal to drink beer on the platform and hang-out. WTF NJT? Get it right sometime this Summer please. It is bad enough you make me deal with drunken NJ devils fans during hockey season. Thanks. Wha are the benefits of mass transit again?? ... To be continued I'm sure.

Beer margarita with hot sauce

I can't remember the Mexican name for this drink right now, but it starts w/ an E'. Anyway on a hot and muggy day this goes down the gullet like nothing else in this world.
Ingredients:
1) Lime to prime the edges of the glass. (Pint glass recommended)
2) Kosher chunky salt
3) Ice
4) Beer
5) A hit of Worcester sauce. There is another Mexican alternative that is a similar steak to sauce.
6) El picante. Tabasco or some hot on top.
7) Squeeze and drop the rest of the lime in and enjoy the bliss on your lips. Don't drink too many as it may do a number on your stomach. But damn is it good going down.

Goes with anything you like to grill during the summer months or at the beach especially.

If I were running for president I would serve the people first. This obviously is fantasy as once they all get the nod the negociation and reality of politics settles in. Promises O'bama VS. Mc older than Cain style of politi. We the people must condone a few things by our local and federal government:
1) No more tax breaks for big oil (duh)
2) Get the F*ck out of the war
3) Reverse all Afred E. Bush laws
4) Get our privacy back
5) Get Education back on Track
6) Only give hand-outs to small business and stop bailing big companies out. Make them sell back to the employees or in smaller chunks not just anothr big fish.
7) Make local townships accountable for where they spend your property taxes. Not sure where you live but in my local government they over pay just like Federal does.
8) Make the adminstration accountable for all the people's money they have giving to special interests and business. In other words answer the question why are contractors running the industrial complex? Who realy works for the government besides US postal service, law enforcement and people in office?
9) Take action with the need to create a cheaper energy that is both environmentally friendly and can harnass local resources. Lots of action going here but not nearly fast or good enough at all yet.
10) Make the rich pay a little more taxes and the poor a little less lets say at an average household income of 1500K a year. Anybody make any less their local taxes and federal avg requirements are lower on a sliding scale to nil.
11) And lastly add more transparency to government.

Idealistic I know but being that we are now looking at a depression not a recession with the price of everything going up (groceries, gas/oil, entertainement and beer). We need to take action and remove power from the morons who have run us so deep into this sh*t. We need to make them pay back their debt and undo the veil. We all need to eat and they are too fat for their own good. Thanks.

The slow pokes dragging their feet are not in my control when I was in full sprint trying to find a open door on the train with a good minute before the 6:23 express depature time. The slow electrical trains hustled me right on time and did not impose on the sweet diesel equipment on the Raritan Valley line out of Newark. But today it took the cake and I damn the conductors who had all of first cars closed except for one door in the middle of the train down the platform. WTF? I am not sure what yahoo thought this sort strategy works but you would think the last couple of doors would be open so the CONNECTING train folk could make it on without hurting theselves and pulling a groin muscle or something. I said THE CONNECTING train folk. BUT Noooooo. Literally one foot from home and beep beep they close the doors. To their usual insult to injury the next train sits around at the mercy of amtrak. NJ Transit I expect more for my $200 dollars a month. Lucky for you the AC was working nicely so letter bombs will not follow this rant but next time get f'kn organized or wait a freaking second to connect people as g*d damn scheduled. FU. Starting with the brainiac who convinced the judges; Pierce, Joan and The Hoff to take part in this modern day Gong Show and pair them up with day time Tn'A wringer Jerry Springer deserves more shares! The bad clips must have been so bad they had to rush through NY, LA and The Chicago auditions in season premier. Most of the winners win from pathetic sympathy votes instead of by their talent, except for a violin duo Nuttin But Stringz and a opera singer who tear jerked the audience to a frency. To kick off this Summer I hit up the local boozery store with a mixed case of summer beer six packs. One of the re-occurring beers is going to be Jimmy Buffet's Island Landshark. great detail on the bottle. Does not feel as heavy as Corona Extra and tasted great with a lime. $6 price-point. The other beer, I fell in love with this Father's day was a lemon summer Shandy from Wisconsin with the zingy flavor already in it! So when i invite you to a bar-b-q you will know what to bring. It's basically a light wheat beer with the twist in it.

Other good choices are Modelos in the can, Dixie from New Orleans (one step above a PBR) and reasonable sixer price point. If you want to get a little fancier Brooklyn Summer Ale is pretty good but find it a little bitter. My old standby when it is really hot is Miller Lite. Yes, this beer snob also knows how to economize when it is sweltering and you just want a guzzler with all the taste of a Budweiser and less calories. A ML pounder is the beer of choice during cocktail hour on the train ride home from Manhattan. Nothing fancy and no hang-over the next day.

Urban Myth confirmation Westfield NJ Memorial Pool

So it is indeed NOT an urban myth. People were in line to get an open slot for the Westfield Memorial Pool at 3AM today and it is now 5:45AM or so. I got in line at 4:15AM and about the 40ish person in line! There are now about 150+ people in the line which wraps along the front of East Broad St. and then back down the side of the old Library entrance. They were still coming as of 7:30...and by then the line wrapped by pond. Easily 500 people.

Recommended required supplies:
Sunglasses, coffee, whiskey, ipod, umbrella, and a chair.

Update:

Only 997 spots open and my family were some of the lucky ones. The joke is that after, according to the rumour mill in the line (Some of moms do gab a lot) the first batch "gets-in" and then there is waiting list that does nothing. So if you missed it get there early. Like 3AM.

On the plus side no monsoon as was forecasted. Just fog. So the experience could have been much worse.

I like righteous and tenacious preachers like Wright and Farakan. They serve a purpose to motivate those that need direction. They have the gift to inspire through emotion and say some pretty outrageous words in church? Is this the right message to get the people all fired up in places like the South side of Chicago? I am not sure we want anybody to be referred to as the KKKamerica though or be a part of said establishment. That segment has gone pretty far underground and shrinking unless you need to feed it some hate fuel. Us vs the others is the same kind of chip on the shoulder mentality that keeps the real-estate divided, the schools and kids behind by making a race line. Culture is funny this way and the major media is picking up on it ever so gently and at the same time fighting morality with Spitzer's Emperor Club situation. Although, the issues are obviously more about class and not race and what money can buy; the people with money and the growing margin without do need hope. A deep understanding that money rules in the end is what is needed from a business and a Do The Right Thing perspective and not a us vs "them". We the people can affect change in the industrial complex but we need to do it without prejudice, without religion based on the information we have at hand and let people live a little and make mistakes. Obama is already looking weathered and it seems to me the reality of the politics at work is starting to take its toll. The question remains can he take the heat? We know a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket could be an ideal and effective team with the charisma and political toughness to make real change for all classes. Subdividing is not the way to go but at this stage of the game it is what it is all about and it is going to get worse. G*d help us.

Moonlight Mile Eastern Anchors session notes

Last weekend over three days and 30 hours we were able to track drums, bass and the basic guitar layers for the debut Eastern Anchors record. The sessions are being engineered by Mike Mobious at his studio Moonlight Mile. We waited almost three months to make sure the 24 track analog Studor machine had all the parts working. So far the process has been a pleasure. We spent a decent amount of time getting the right sounds through various amps and guitars. Now we move forward to vocals. More soon.

How to slow down time

I'm not sure why times goes by so fast year to year or who the expert is but 2007 is gone. In this time I've joined every body's community site in an effort to slow time down or at least document all sorts useless information. In doing so I've seem to have lost precious time doing other more "productive" stuff but then again the amount of time i would need far exceeds the dismal amount of time for a blog post like this one lets say. Quality time comes in 4 hour chunks which is quite the commodity. Mr. Hand also had a theory as did Enstein with the theory of relativity. Does time really slow down when we are bored and move fast when we moving fast? This guy figured how to move things backwards. I started podcasting over 1 year ago to document time as it relates to music and have always had bands like the eastern anchors in an attempt to have a place in music history; which is one way I have found to slow time down, for whatever reason when you are playing music time seems to pause but for moment, so when you play back music you've actually created it has the physical ability to take you back in time. Taking photos is another way to this but not as strong as the music thing. So if you figure out how to stop time please let me know. I know cardio exercise is one way to slow down your metabalism for the pysical manifestation of one's own-self in body form. In any case have a happy new year and enjoy!

The six degrees of separation are beginning to converge rather quickly. The current format of Social networks and advertising networks are trying to glean your click through and figure out what the CPA(cost per acquisition) comes out to, which is currently semi-silo'd. Meaning we live in distinct valleys of information that is ripe for the rooting of advertising stream billions. These silos are beginning to change how we connect with the advent of widgets and aps. Web 2.0 is already old news for most of us living in 2007 realtime intraweb. The next level, as discussed by Tim Berners Lee is this third level after (1) the internet phase and (2) the storage of web documents what is being called a social graph for web users to take back control. This current phenomenon, what is loosely being defined as what links relationships between people and/or documents -- "the things documents are about" and how they relate to people who give it meaning. It is easy to agree that nothing is free. E.G. Ads make the world go around. You accepted it on TV and we will accept in our future consumption of video content and any means of social entertainment (err, except for nasty interruptions of our 1-1 phone connections). The hypothesis is that users will demand DVR for web where YOU as the user gets to sort best of social connections and who pays to connect to you. I don't like Nike but will let Puma talk to send me stuff if i had to choose. Although, Wikinomics book says that "relationships are the one thing you cannot commoditize", and yes people harrumphed when gmail scanned your email for things you might like but we were quick to forget and then blindly import our email without flinching to suck their friends into facebook or linkedin, etc and invite them to join the fun. Who the hell reads the fine-print anyway when you sign-up Anyway? Most recently Plaxo Pulse allows you to suck in your favorite social network stuff (flickr, blogger feeds, facebook) and expanding their ap library everyday. The discussion now on the table in the blogosphere is to a create social network media API, as was done with the adopted J2EE standards, to get everybody in tune with the governance rules for usage of these social connections (remember all the info we put in our web docs? remember?). Read Write Web's post does a great job of explaining the concepts around the social graph and their implications with a lot of quality feedback and concerns around who controls the information pipe and goes in deeper with issues surrounding life online. There are some really cool visual looks into these vertical social connections. Graphs can be churned out of almost any kind of one to many mathematical relationship, like data from 9/11 terrorist networks to the Spread of Obesity in a Large Social Networks and everything in between, to have that A-HA moment visit Visual Complexity project dissections set for various social network queries. So the next time you fill out yet another profile be aware that your info is not your own.

Ah, one thing that cracks me up is the futility of dump people (can't help them), people who send out spam email jokes(although sometimes funny), and well stupid T-shirts. EL Chingaderohas got some good stuff if your closet can stand one more dumbasaurus t-shirt or smart ass saying. But just in case you were looking for gift ideas this might cover your budget for those hard to find stocking stuffers. I'm partial to a few(including the drummer and the enabler T on their site) in case you were wondering what to get me for xmas.

I love it when a political pundit shows their weird side. Rumour has it that Presidential hopeful Kucinich digs UFO's(confirmed by HP) and that there is a new AirForce Flying Saucer study on the way. Check out reports of thestrange undentified shapes via the National UFO reporting center. I must confess I've read every Bud Hopkins book and I'm still a believer, secretly looking up in the Sky for the fateful moment where i too can have a close encounter of some kind.

Ultimate Top 10 Stoner Drug movie list of all time

I would be remiss on this list of lists to not qualifty some of the requirements to put a movie on this list. First rule. It has to be quotable. Second. the sound track needs to rock. third rule. see first rule. Ok so cliche as this might be this really is a subjective list and really the only way to check it's validity is too see some of the flims for yourself. There are probably some obvious things not included here and for all intent and purposes this could be my top 10 list all times. Go figure.

10)Spinal Tap - Got to love Rob Reiner's Rockmentary classic. This one goes to 11. Released 1984

9)The Trip - The distorted and non-lsd word are explained here in a movie by Peter Fonda. Good place to start and stop the drug thing. Bizare stuff. If you ever wanted to do some hard stuff. Check this out first and turn up the volume and pretend you can't stop it. that is what LSD is like. Released 1967

8) Easy Rider - Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson have this great pot smoking scene where where Jack goes off on Minutians before contemplating that smoking the reffers will lead to other things. Also starring Dennis Hopper. Get your motor riding. Released in 1969.

7)Suburbia - There is poker posse movie which is not this one. The one you need to check out really goes into the depths of the punk subculture with a dramatic big wheel scene directed Penelope Spheeris. Released in 1983

6)Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Sean Penns break-out movie wether he likes it or not he will always be Jeff Spicoli. He made checkered vans famous and you gotta love Mr. Hands conversation about time and Phoebe Cates assets. Released 1982

5)The Jerk - Either you love Steve Martin or you hate him. This is one of the funniest 70's movies ever where the mother of invention lets us all live in the big house. The music are alll little tunes written by Steve and extreme on the stupid scale. Released 1979

4)Trainspotting - If it is not for the rave music (or whatever it is) the toilet scene alone defines what it means to be small(That is slang for being high).

3)Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams Sort of an obvious choice. These guys are the pothead gurus.

2)Apocalypse Now it's dark, it has the Rolling Stones and The doors intro sequence with "The End" are just the set-up of some of the best dialog ever in a film; Dennis Hopper, Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando's diatribe about the morality of war is briliant and very relevant considering the wrongness of IRAQ. Very heavy, heavy film. Release 1979.

1)Repo man - It has it all. Amazing punk sound track complete with the circle jerks, suicidal tendancies and others. If this movie trailer, clocking in at 2 minutes, does anything for the un-iniciatd. You will check it out in full. In highschool we used to play this flick over and over during parties. It's been awhile since i've been on the mountain since little kido Zgirl made it into my world six months ago. Although i've been riding my hybrid for an hour every weekend, it's just not enougth. So just to make me miss the mountain; rider Ryan sent the NJ weekend warrior mountain bikers this video of Six mile run in NJ. Now i can pretend to ride at work from this pov video. soon enough I'll get there and not just gab smartly about riding every once in awhile.

I've been giggling all morning at my find on a Buzz feed search on all the anti-social networking sites out there. Natural Search Blog has a good review on hatebook.org points out a Antisocial Media and optmiziation phenomenom where bad press is a good thing and if you are into SEO(search engine optimization) all the haters will flock and give you web traffic [join I love to hate Britney Spears Clan]. Ironic Yes, proof is in the pudin' here. People love a good car crash. Hatebook is extremely transparent to the level where there is no privacy policy, people can see who is stalking who and all "junkmail” is open to members. Hilarious. isolatr.com is another good one, where you can't even login and claims to help 'you be where people aren't', third on the list nosoproject.com, which is similar to happening, except you aren't allowed to engage although you are converging with other like minded folks and disconnect from the world. So literally tune-out you freaking network hippies and get off my space.

How to watch tv all day and pretend to work

The tv fridge at work in the cubicle next to me has taken on a life of it's own. I honestly have a hard time working at home if there is anybody around. CNN on background is ok, blasting music is ok unless the phone rings, and then there is the damn dog barking and the mailman. So having the tv mini fridge lounge area at work is making me feel at home without actually being at home. The other problem is that the internet is the new tv.
